The City and the Challenges of Popular-Urban Movements

Lima: “Social Summit of the Towns”

Urban Forum:

May 13th, 3 p.m., Room 6

The social organisations of the Popular Urban Movement, in which we take action in the struggles of the Peruvian people, will come together at the Social Summit of the Towns, to express the voices of the people of the city. And we do this in our condition of self-managed constructors of the cities.

The objective is to break the invisible wall that divides the city between rich and poor, and envisage and create a democratic, habitable and safe city. The struggle against segregation and exclusion of the working-class neighborhoods, against inhumane cities, is and has historically always been a necessity for creating an alternative city. It is for this same reason that we demand our rights for dignified housing, participative urban renovation, recognition of the human right to water and its non-privatisation, land politics orientated to resolving the substantial deficit in housing. And also, the need to propel participative processes of management in the local and regional governments. In this line, the RIGHT TO THE CITY, takes its place in the struggle against neoliberalism and its tools of domination, such as the FMI, BM, BID, the TLCs and the Commercial Agreements.

Therefore, the time has come for the urban social movements to move foward in the articulation and unitiy of our struggle, to build together an URBAN SOCIAL AGENDA, and by taking this path, to transform the popular urban movement into a social and political actor, capable not only of making demands, but also of building pragmatic alternatives to the neoliberlism from the city.
