Europeans hold their housing States-General
On 5 and 6 November 2007, the European parliament will be the stage of the first States-General on housing rights hosted by the European United Left.
This summit is the result of several meetings between key figures in housing rights, held during the European Social Forum in Athens and later in Bobigny, a suburb of Paris, last February. These meetings gathered politicians, non governmental organisations, unions and researchers to work towards a common goal: “Together, for a summit on housing rights.”
The States General is but the first phase of a movement which will bring together over a hundred representatives of a dozen countries within and beyond the boundaries of the European Union.
This, the first event of its type, will permit not only a better understanding of the realities faced in each country in terms of housing, but also the possibility to exchange points of view on the claims and propositions of various social, political and citizens’ movements, with the common purpose of deciding how to gain recognition for housing rights throughout Europe.
The event coordinators are : International Alliance of Inhabitants, National Association of Elected Communists and Republicans – (ANECR) France, Group for Dignified Housing (Plataforma para une Vivienda digna) - Spain, and REALPE Network of European Local Authorities for Progress).
