Presentation
The various international networks for the right to habitat that signed the World Assembly Declaration, Convergence of Inhabitants for the Right to Habitat on February 10th 2011, have committed to making World Habitat Day in October 2011 an important opportunity for raising awareness of and rallying against forced evictions, insecurity of tenure and land grabbing, in solidarity with activists for the right to habitat and with inhabitants.
The themes of the 2011 Global Campaign “Resistances and Alternatives for the Right to Habitat ” are: i) the causes and effects of forced evictions, the suffering and impoverishment of people of affected by rural and urban habitat problems; and ii) solidarity with activists for the right to habitat who have been victimized by repression and violence against their civil and political rights.
We ask all organizations, or people who have fought for the right to housing, to share on this blog cases relating to violations to the right to habitat and to the victimization of activists and organizations, in addition to the events planned as part of the Campaign. We encourage to also share all the topics, strategies and methods that are to be used in the fight at the local, regional and global levels. The Global Campaign will run from September 16th through October 31st 2011.
Goals of the Campaign
The Campaign seeks to strengthen the struggles around the world against violations of the Right to Habitat by fighting against, for instance, forced evictions, and addressing the suffering and impoverishment of people affected by rural and urban habitat problems. Achieving this objective also entails building solidarity between activists for the right to habitat and between those who have been victimized by repression and violence. More specifically, the Campaign will work on identifying and developing the capacities of networks and organizations working on habitat issues towards another possible world.
Interactive Tools
This Blog is one of the collective tools that we have created where all organizations and individuals concerned with the defense of the right to habitat and the victimization of activists who work in this area are encouraged to share initiatives and suggestions to ensure the Campaign’s success.
An interactive global map has been created to document cases of resistances and violations to the right to habitat, as well as of the victimization of activists or organizations with which we would like to express our solidarity. A second map will focus on illustrating the local, national, regional and global events and activities taking place in the setting of the Campaign.
